As a National competition for five years, Bright Young Things has produced many memorable moments and performances. Previous years 'Live Bands' Showcases' were held in Leeds legendary venues The Duchess of York (local and regional heats) and the The Town & Country Club (all National Finals).
The gigs were intended to provide a powerful focus for the participating bands and to stimulate wider interest in the Leeds live music scene. They were also an opportunity for young bands to simply meet each other as well as play to sell-out crowds in professional venues, often for the first time.
Many bands have found BYT to be a useful stepping stone. Such as the winners of BYT 2000, 'Insense' (now called The Music), were spotted by a major management company at the Final and are now going from strength to strength, while 1998 champions Bodixa (now called Star*Bodixa are also attracting serious industry interest.
In 2001 the style of BYT changed. Instead of it being national, the focus shifted to local. Instead of it being a live-based 'battle of the bands' format, a number of bands were selected to appear on two different age-group CDs. Each band also received free advice, a photo-shoot and the chance to record their material.
Limited numbers of Bright Young Things 1999, 2000 and 2001 promotional CDs are
